I am a bassist and have performed with people like Elvin Jones, Nnenna Freelon, Wynton, Ellis, Jason and Delfeayo Marsalis, and Cyrus Chestnut; among my recording and writing credits is the Grammy nominated, Shaking Free, with Nnenna Freelon. I am settled in North Carolina as the Director of the Jazz Program at Duke University and performing as a substitute with the North Carolina Symphony. I am actively performing and recording internationally leading my own trio, quintet, (which recently had a recording reach #8 on the national JazzWeek chart) and full Jazz Orchestra (which just recorded its debut album, due out this year). Description:
"Brown"s woody bass tones are resounding and full of soulful authority . . . brilliant bass solo . . . this homage to Art is solidly swinging and full of deep feeling from start to finish." – Jazz Times “ . . . a hard-swinging bassist . . . solid hard-bop music, played with consummate skill . . .“ - jazz.com “…a study in straight-ahead, groove oriented hard bop…[John’s] phrasing and use of time to establish a solid groove is excellent…Brown’s first solo is masterful – one’s only regret is that the offering is not longer… Brown manages an effective balance of satisfying his audience’s expectations while simultaneously surprising us with fresh reinterpretations of this canonical material…solidly executed…well-composed…a solid success that should leave sympathetic listeners wanting more…” – Jazz Improv Magazine
