New York guitarist JJ Sansaverino is set to bring his unique blend of smooth jazz, R&B, blues, and reggae to Nell’s in West Kensington on September 16th. Known for his chart-topping singles and collaborations with renowned artists like Maxi Priest, Maceo Parker, and Randy Brecker, JJ Sansaverino draws inspiration from the vibrant streets of New York City and various musical influences.
The Beginning of a Musical Journey
Born into a family of singers, JJ Sansaverino started playing the violin and trumpet before discovering an old guitar in a closet, setting him on a path that would ultimately lead to the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston. As a more educated player, he began to appreciate the complexities and expressions of various musical styles, from the works of Tony Bennett and Nat King Cole to the iconic guitar sounds of Carlos Santana and George Benson.
The Freedom of Smooth Jazz
Sansaverino’s passion for smooth jazz lies in its ability to encompass multiple genres, such as rock, Latin, reggae, and R&B, allowing for a more dynamic and satisfying performance. He believes that smooth jazz transcends the boundaries of traditional jazz performances and enables musicians to take the audience on a journey through various moods, tempos, and electrifying sounds.
The Art of Musical Conversation
On stage, JJ Sansaverino encourages his musicians to engage in “conversations” with each other, swapping improvised phrases that create a cohesive and engaging experience for the audience. As a performer, he emphasizes the importance of strong melodies and the ability to tell a story through music that is both fun and interesting.
The Inspiration Behind the Music
Influenced by the diverse sounds of New York City, Sansaverino often composes music in his head before putting it down on paper or recording it. He finds inspiration in the everyday noises of city life, from salsa music to rock and reggae. As a self-sufficient musician, he takes pride in arranging and producing his own music, with the exception of the final mix, which he leaves to professionals.
Making Connections with the Audience
Despite his previous appearances in London as a member of Maxi Priest’s band, this will mark Sansaverino’s first solo performance in the city. He is eager to connect with his audience, not just through his music, but also through personal interactions, sharing stories and making people smile.
