A Night of Musical Imagination

Glaswegian drummer Corrie Dick brought his unique musical vision to life during the Jazz Hastings tour date for his Sun Swells ensemble. The band, fronted by the captivating vocals of Swede Rebecka Edlund, delivered a performance full of heart and emotion. With Rob Luft on guitar, Laura Jurd on trumpet, Elliot Galvin on piano, and Calum Gourlay on double bass, the group provided a constant stream of uplifting sonic moments that enchanted the audience.

Musical Synergy

Each member of the youthful sextet demonstrated a deep understanding of their role in the music, perhaps a result of their experiences playing together in different contexts at renowned institutions like Trinity Laban and the Royal Academy of Music. This synergy allowed their performance to be a seamless and harmonious experience for the audience.

A Unique Venue

The East Hastings Sea Angling Association at the Stade, located in Hastings, is among the UK’s most memorable jazz venues. Its elevated position on the shingle by the English Channel, complete with a balcony open to the southern sky, provided a perfect backdrop for Sun Swells’ music. The band’s lyrics often reference the sea, wide vistas, and natural beauty, making the venue an ideal match for their performance.

A Fusion of Influences

Sun Swells’ music draws inspiration from various cultures and styles, including Celtic, Nordic, and African influences. Tunes such as “Sinking,” “Golden Flower,” and “She Speaks” were presented as parts of a whole, interconnected experience. Corrie Dick occasionally addressed the audience, though his unamplified voice was difficult to hear. However, the band’s soundscapes, grooves, and sweeping chord changes, along with Edlund’s delicate vocals, effectively conveyed their message.

A Highly Accomplished Ensemble

Sun Swells is a talented group that skillfully integrates a diverse array of influences through individual instruments and collective interplay. Their deeply felt, authentic compositions reflect a strong sense of camaraderie and collaboration among the musicians.

About Me

I’m Dr. Miles Beaumont from the charming town of York in the UK. I’ve spent over three decades as a medical doctor, helping people and contributing to important research. I graduated from Oxford University, and ever since, I’ve devoted myself to improving the health and lives of others.

When I’m not practicing medicine, you’ll find me soaking up the world of jazz music. It’s been a passion of mine since I turned 30, and I’ve been an active part of York’s jazz scene ever since. Whether it’s going to local gigs, listening to records at home, or just enjoying the rhythmic and improvisational magic of jazz, it’s a big part of who I am.
